Welcome to Temple Bnai Israel
We are pleased to welcome you to our community. The best way to get to know us is to come and meet us. It won’t take you long to experience our members' warmth, dedication and openness to all who want to share our journey.
There is no "typical" member of Temple Bnai Israel. We come from different backgrounds, observe in different ways, and choose different ways to be involved in synagogue life. We believe that our varied experiences contribute to our sense of being on a Jewish journey together. Many of our members are in interfaith marriages. We support the commitment of interfaith couples who work together to raise Jewish children in an atmosphere of respect for all of humanity’s search for a meaningful relationship with God. Our services are completely egalitarian. Men and women participate equally in all aspects of the service. Non-Jewish family members are welcome at services and are heavily involved in Temple activities.
History
Temple
Bnai Israel has been a part of the greater Willimantic community for over 90
years and in our current building for 35. We
take pride in having passed a spark of Torah from generation to generation.
Temple Bnai Israel began as an Orthodox synagogue and belonged to the Conservative movement for many years. Early in 2000 we decided that the Conservative affiliation no longer met our needs as an inclusive and growing Jewish community. In 2002, after a yearlong exploration, we affiliated with the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation. As a Reconstructionist community, we have continued to explore and define our Temple's unique identity and our place in the wider Jewish community. We welcome you to join us.
